What happens to your Emirates ID when your 2-year visa expires?

The Emirates ID has no separate countdown. When the visa lapses, so does the card — at banks, hospitals, phone shops and airport e-gates.

Quick answer

Your Emirates ID expires on the same day as your residence visa, because it is a record of that visa. Standard residence visas usually have a grace period of around 30 days to renew or leave; Golden Visa, Green Visa and certain other holders have a longer grace period. Renew the visa and the Emirates ID is renewed with it.

Why the dates match

ICP sets the Emirates ID expiry to match the residence visa. You cannot renew the card on its own; the renewal follows the visa.

The grace period

After expiry there is a grace period to renew or leave. It is shorter for standard 2-year visas and longer for long-term residence such as the Golden Visa. Overstay fines start when the grace period ends.

Check the exact grace period for your visa type with ICP or GDRFA — it differs between categories.

What stops working

  • Bank services that require a valid ID
  • Mobile line and utility changes
  • Airport e-gates
  • Some government and health services

How to fix it

Start your visa renewal 30 to 60 days before expiry. For a 2-year property visa that means a new application through the DLD, a medical test and new biometrics; the new Emirates ID is issued with the renewed visa.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel with an expired Emirates ID?

Travel depends on your residence status, not the card. If the visa has expired, re-entry is not guaranteed.

Is there a fine for an expired Emirates ID?

Fines can apply after the grace period, so renew on time.
