Is the UAE Golden Visa permanent residency? What it really gives you
2 min read 13

"Permanent" is the word people use, but it is not what the law says. Here is the plain difference — and why the Golden Visa still comes close.
Quick answer
No. The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residence visa — usually 10 years, renewable for as long as you keep meeting a qualifying condition. It is not permanent residency and it is not a route to citizenship. In practice it is the most stable residence the UAE offers: no employer sponsor, no six-month absence rule, and family sponsorship included.
The Golden Visa is often marketed as "permanent residency". That shorthand causes real confusion when renewal time comes, so it is worth being precise about what it is.
What the Golden Visa is
It is a self-sponsored residence visa granted for 10 years (5 years in a few categories). You do not need an employer or a local sponsor, and your Emirates ID is issued for the same period.
What it gives you
- Residence without an employer or local sponsor
- Sponsorship of your spouse and children regardless of their age, and of your parents
- Sponsorship of domestic workers
- No cancellation for staying outside the UAE for more than six months
- A longer grace period for family members if the main holder's visa ends
What it does not give you
- Citizenship or a UAE passport
- A residence that lasts for life without renewal
- Tax residency on its own — that depends on days spent in the UAE and other tests
How renewal works
At renewal you must again meet a qualifying condition — for example owning property worth 2 million, earning the qualifying salary or keeping the qualifying investment. If you no longer meet the original condition, you may qualify through a different route.
Think of it as "permanent while you qualify". Plan renewal 30 to 60 days before expiry so nothing lapses.
