How long can Golden Visa holders stay outside the UAE?

For a normal resident the question is how many days you have been away. For a Golden Visa holder it is simply: when does my visa expire, and will I be…

Quick answer

As long as you like. The six-month absence rule that cancels ordinary residence visas does not apply to Golden Visa holders. The only condition is that the visa must still be valid when you return — if it expires while you are abroad, you will need a new entry permit to come back.

Where the rule comes from

The UAE government lists staying outside the country beyond six months as a core Golden Visa benefit. GDRFA Dubai describes Golden Residence holders as exempt from the 180-day rule.

What can still end your residency

  • The visa expiring while you are abroad
  • Losing the qualifying basis at renewal (for example selling the property)
  • Cancellation on request or by the authorities

Family members

Sponsored family members on a Golden Visa file generally benefit from the same exemption, but their passports and Emirates IDs must stay valid.

Planning a long stay abroad

  • Note your visa and Emirates ID expiry dates
  • Keep health insurance active if required for renewal
  • Renew in time — you need to be in the UAE for medical and biometrics
  • Update passport details if you renew your passport abroad

If you will be away near renewal time, plan a trip back early enough to complete the renewal before expiry.
